Belirtme Hâli A1

The Turkish Accusative Case • -(y)ı / -(y)i / -(y)u / -(y)ü
Goal: Understand when a direct object needs an ending, choose the correct ending, use sound changes correctly, and build natural everyday sentences.
1

Start with the meaning

The direct object is the person or thing affected by the action. Ask: What? or Whom?

Ben kitabı okuyorum.
I am reading the book.
Anna kahveyi içiyor.
Anna is drinking the coffee.
Öğretmen öğrenciyi görüyor.
The teacher sees the student.
2

Specific or general?

GENERAL / NON-SPECIFIC

Bir kitap okuyorum.

I am reading a book. We do not know exactly which book.

SPECIFIC / DEFINITE

Kitabı okuyorum.

I am reading the book. The speaker and listener know which one.

specific direct object + -(y)ı / -(y)i / -(y)u / -(y)ü
Important: Turkish does not have a separate word for “the.” The accusative ending often helps express that meaning.
3

Notice the difference

Kahve içiyorum.
I drink / am drinking coffee.
Kahveyi içiyorum.
I am drinking the coffee.
Film izliyoruz.
We are watching a film.
Filmi izliyoruz.
We are watching the film.
Form

Look at the last vowel of the noun.
4

5

If the noun ends in a vowel, add the bridge letter y before the ending.

kahve + y + i → kahveyi
the coffee
çanta + y + ı → çantayı
the bag
oda + y + ı → odayı
the room
taksi + y + i → taksiyi

Sound Changes

The word may change

Common consonant softening before a vowel.
6

p, ç, t, k can soften

When a noun ends in p, ç, t, k and receives a vowel beginning ending, the final consonant often changes.

p → b

kitap → kita
dolap → dola

ç → c

ağaç → ağa
ilaç → ila

t → d

kağıt → kağı
yoğurt → yoğurdu

k → ğ / g

ekmek → ekmeği
renk → rengi

Do not force the rule onto every word. Some one-syllable words and loanwords do not soften: topu, kartı, parkı. Learn common words through examples.

Practice B — Write the accusative form

  1. kitap →
  2. ağaç →
  3. ekmek →
  4. dolap →

Anna'nın Kayıp Telefonu

Read once for the story, then read again and find the objects.

Telefon orada! Anna telefonunu alıyor ve Deniz'e teşekkür ediyor. Sonra iki arkadaş kahvaltıyı birlikte bitiriyor.
