Sıfat-Fiiller
Turn a verb into a description: gelen kişi, aldığım kitap, gideceğimiz yer.
Goal: Describe people, things and places through the actions connected to them.
One idea, one phrase
Bir kadın geliyor.A woman is coming.
Gelen kadın benim öğretmenim.The woman who is coming is my teacher.
Bir kitap aldım.I bought a book.
Aldığım kitap çok güzel.The book that I bought is very good.
Sıfat-fiil means a verb form that describes a noun. It lets Turkish combine two short sentences into one natural sentence.
-(y)an / -(y)enthe person or thing doing the action
-dık / -dik + personthe person or thing affected by the action
-acak / -eceka future action connected to a noun
The Noun Does the Action
-(y)an / -(y)en
Use this form when the noun you describe performs the action.

İstanbul'da yaşayan arkadaşımmy friend who lives in Istanbul
No person ending is needed: çalışan ben, çalışan sen and çalışan insanlar all keep the same -an/-en form.
Spelling & Negatives
Başlayan, Okuyan, Gelmeyen
Use buffer -y- after vowels; put the negative ending before the participle.

Very useful question: “Buradan geçen bir otobüs var mı?” — Is there a bus that passes here?
The Noun Receives the Action
-dık / -dik + Kişi Eki
Use this family when someone does an action to, about or with the noun you describe.

onun yaşadığı şehirthe city where he/she lives
bizim gittiğimiz kafethe café that we went to
Why a possessive ending? It shows who performs the action inside the description: aldığım = that I bought; aldığın = that you bought.
Who Does the Action?
Yaptığım, Yaptığın, Yaptığı...
The personal meaning is carried by possessive endings.

K → Ğ: The underlying ending is -DIK. Before the possessive vowel, k softens: yap + tık + ım → yaptığım; gör + dük + ün → gördüğün.
The subject is often omitted: Benim aldığım kitap and Aldığım kitap are both correct when “I” is clear.
The Essential Choice
Arayan Kadın mı, Aradığım Kadın mı?
Ask whether the described noun does the action or receives it.
Beni arayan kadınthe woman who called me
The woman performs the action → -an
Benim aradığım kadınthe woman whom I called
I perform the action; the woman receives it → -DIK
Bu yemeği yapan adamthe man who made this food
Adamın yaptığı yemekthe food that the man made
Fast test: Can the noun directly do the verb? “Kadın arıyor.” Yes → arayan kadın. “Kitap okuyor.” No, someone reads the book → okuduğum kitap.
Future Descriptions
-acak / -ecek
Describe someone or something through a future action.

Spelling: yapacak + ım → yapacağım; gidecek + iz → gideceğiz. In adjective form: yapacağım iş, gideceğimiz yer.

Mina: Evet. Balkona açılan büyük penceresi olan ev mi?

Follow the people, objects and places described by actions.
Geçen hafta yan daireye taşınan kişinin adı Deniz. Deniz, uzaktan çalışan bir grafik tasarımcı. İlk tanıştığımız gün bize kendi yaptığı kurabiyelerden getirdi. Getirdiği kurabiyeler gerçekten çok lezzetliydi.
Deniz'in daha önce yaşadığı şehir İzmir'miş. Porto'ya gelmesinin nedeni burada bulduğu yeni işi. Çalışacağı ofis bizim evimize çok yakın. Her sabah ofise giden otobüs de sokağımızdan geçiyor.
Dün apartmanda bozulan asansöre birlikte baktık. Tamir etmeye çalışan kişi apartman görevlisiydi ama sorunu çözemedi. Deniz, daha önce öğrendiği birkaç basit yöntemi deneyip asansörü çalıştırdı. Herkes çok sevindi.
