Compare people, places and things with daha, en and kadar.
Goal: Say “bigger than,” “as comfortable as” and “the most beautiful” naturally in everyday Turkish.
Three essential tools
dahamore / -er
Bu ev daha büyük.
This house is bigger.
kadaras ... as
Bu ev o ev kadar büyük.
This house is as big as that house.
enthe most / -est
Bu en büyük ev.
This is the biggest house.
Good news: Turkish adjectives do not change. büyük stays büyük; you only add comparison words around it.
Comparatives
Daha: More / -er
Put daha immediately before the adjective or adverb.
Bu çanta daha ucuz.This bag is cheaper.
Yeni telefon daha hızlı.The new phone is faster.
Bugün hava daha sıcak.The weather is warmer today.
Biraz daha yavaş konuş.Speak a little more slowly.
Useful intensifiers: biraz daha = a little more; çok daha = much more. “Bu oda çok daha aydınlık.”
Comparing Two Things
A, B'den Daha...
The thing you compare against takes the ablative ending -dan / -den / -tan / -ten.
A+B + -dan/-den+daha + adjective
İstanbul Ankara'dan daha kalabalık.Istanbul is more crowded than Ankara.
Tren otobüsten daha hızlı.The train is faster than the bus.
Bu yemek ötekinden daha lezzetli.This food is tastier than the other one.
Ela benden daha uzun.Ela is taller than me.

Equality
Kadar: As ... As
Use kadar when two people or things are equal in one quality.
Bu oda salon kadar büyük.This room is as big as the living room.
Mert senin kadar sakin.Mert is as calm as you.
Evdeki kahve buradaki kadar güzel.The coffee at home is as good as the one here.
Benim telefonum seninki kadar yeni değil.My phone is not as new as yours.
Negative equality: B kadar + adjective + değil means “not as ... as B.” Do not use daha in this pattern.
Superlatives
En: The Most / -est
Put en before the adjective. The group can come before it or use içinde.

Remember the noun compound: şehrin en eski binası, ailenin en küçük çocuğu. The group is the owner, so both nouns take the required endings.
Natural Everyday Forms
Daha İyi, Daha Az, En Fazla
Some very common comparison words do not translate word for word.

Bu daha iyi.

Dün daha kötüydü.
daha fazlamore
Daha fazla su iç.
daha azless / fewer
Daha az şeker.
en çokthe most
En çok bunu seviyorum.
en azthe least / at least
En az iki saat.
Native distinction: Use en çok with verbs: “En çok kahveyi seviyorum.” Use en fazla for a maximum amount: “En fazla üç kişi gelebilir.”

Hangisi Daha İyi?
Use comparison questions when choosing food, clothes, homes or transport.
Müşteri: Bu iki ceketten hangisi daha sıcak?
Satıcı: Siyah olan daha sıcak ama kahverengi olan daha hafif.
Müşteri: Hangisi daha ucuz?
Satıcı: Kahverengi ceket siyah ceketten daha ucuz.
Müşteri: Peki en dayanıklısı hangisi?
Satıcı: Bence siyah olan en dayanıklısı.

Compare two homes and make a decision.
Deniz: İki ev de güzel ama merkezdeki ev daha küçük.
Lara: Evet, diğer ev bundan daha büyük ve daha aydınlık.
Deniz: Ama merkeze daha uzak. Merkezdeki ev işe daha yakın.
Lara: Doğru. Kirası da diğer evden biraz daha ucuz.
Deniz: Peki hangisi daha sessiz?
Lara: Büyük olan daha sessiz. Ayrıca en güzel balkon onda.
Deniz: Bence ulaşım konum kadar önemli. Merkezdeki evi seçelim.

İki Kardeş, İki Farklı Hayat
Find daha, en and kadar in a natural text.
Elif ve kardeşi Can birbirlerinden oldukça farklı. Elif Can'dan üç yaş büyük. Can, Elif kadar düzenli değil ama ondan daha sosyal. Elif sabahları daha erken kalkıyor ve işine bisikletle gidiyor. Can ise daha geç kalkıyor çünkü işi evine daha yakın.
Elif için haftanın en güzel günü cumartesi. Sabah pazara gidiyor, sonra uzun bir yürüyüş yapıyor. Can'ın en sevdiği gün cuma çünkü arkadaşlarıyla dışarı çıkıyor. İkisi de kahveyi seviyor fakat Can Elif'ten daha fazla kahve içiyor.
Geçen ay birlikte tatile gittiler. Kaldıkları küçük otel şehir merkezindeki büyük oteller kadar lüks değildi ama çok daha sessizdi. Elif'e göre tatilin en güzel kısmı denizdi. Can'a göre ise yemekler denizden daha güzeldi. Farklı olmalarına rağmen birlikte çok eğlendiler.
