Consonant Assimilation Ünsüz Benzeşmesi

Also called consonant hardening — ünsüz sertleşmesi.
Lesson goal: You will choose the correct suffix after words ending in a hard consonant: -de/-te, -den/-ten, -di/-ti, -ci/-çi.

The hard consonants

Turkish has eight consonants that trigger this rule. We remember them with the phrase Fıstıkçı Şahap.

What changes?

When a suffix begins with d or c, these sounds become harder after one of the eight consonants.

Compare: işte = at work • işten = from work. The final ş makes the suffix begin with t in both forms.

The same rule appears in the witnessed past tense.

Past-tense set: -dı / -di / -du / -dü becomes -tı / -ti / -tu / -tü after Fıstıkçı Şahap.

Porto'da Hareketli Bir Cumartesi

Read the story and find the hardened suffixes.
Selin cumartesi sabahı saat sekizde uyandı. Önce mutfakta kahve yaptı ve balkonda kahvaltı etti. Sonra evden çıktı. Hava güzeldi, bu yüzden sahilden merkeze kadar yürüdü.

Selin saat onda Bolhão'da arkadaşı Anna'yla buluştu. Birlikte kitapçıya gittiler. Anna Türkçe bir hikâye kitabı aldı. Kitapçıdan çıktıktan sonra küçük bir kafede oturdular. Selin Türkçe konuştu, Anna dikkatle dinledi ve yeni kelimeleri defterine yazdı.

Öğleden sonra São Bento'dan trene bindiler ve kısa bir gezi yaptılar. Parkta biraz yürüdüler, sonra bir balıkçıda yemek yediler. Anna balık yedi, Selin ise sebze çorbası içti.
