Consonant Softening Ünsüz Yumuşaması

A small sound change that makes Turkish easier to pronounce.
Lesson goal: You will recognize and use p → b, ç → c, t → d, k → ğ/g when a vowel-starting suffix is added.
1

Listen to the ending

Some Turkish words end in the hard consonants p, ç, t, k. When we add a suffix that begins with a vowel, the final consonant often becomes softer.

p → bkitap → kitabı
ç → cağaç → ağacı
t → dkanat → kanadı
k → ğ / gçocuk → çocuğu
word + vowel-starting suffix → final sound may soften
Memory key: PeÇeTeK
Think of the four hard consonants together: p – ç – t – k. They may become b – c – d – ğ/g.

Practice A — Complete the sound pairs

  1. p → ___
  2. ç → ___
  3. t → ___
  4. k → ___ / ___
  1. kita___ı
  2. ağa___ı
  3. kana___ı
  4. çocu___u
The Core Rule

When Does It Happen?

First check the word. Then check the suffix.
2

Two conditions

1. The word ends in p, ç, t or k

kitap, ağaç, kanat, çocuk

2. The suffix starts with a vowel

-ı/-i/-u/-ü, -(y)a/-(y)e, -(y)ı, -(s)ı, -(ı)m…

kitap + ı → kitabı
the book / his or her book
ağaç + a → ağaca
to the tree
kanat + ı → kanadı
its wing
çocuk + u → çocuğu
the child / his or her child
3

No vowel? Usually no softening

kitap + lar → kitaplar
books
ağaç + tan → ağaçtan
from the tree
çocuk + lar → çocuklar
children

Practice B — Soften or keep?

  1. kitap + ı →
  2. kitap + lar →
  3. ağaç + a →

Important Detail

Not Every Word Softens

The rule is common, but Turkish also has exceptions.
!

Short words often keep their consonant

Many one-syllable words do not soften. Learn these as complete forms.

top + u → topu
not “tobu”
saç + ı → saçı
not “sacı”
süt + ü → sütü
not “südü”
park + a → parka
not “parğa”
4

Loanwords and proper names

Some borrowed words stay hard

saat → saati
sanat → sanatı
hukuk → hukuku

Proper names do not change in writing

Ahmet'i, not “Ahmed'i”
Zonguldak'a, not “Zonguldağ'a”

Best beginner strategy: Apply the main rule to common multi-syllable Turkish words. Notice and memorize exceptions when you meet them.

Practice E — Choose the correct form

Personal task — My five phrases

Write five true sentences using softened words: kitabı, çocuğu, yemeği, rengi, mutfağa…

Reading

Elif'in Aile Yemeği

Read first. Then hunt for consonant softening.
Bugün Elif'in evinde aile yemeği var. Elif sabah erkenden mutfağa gidiyor.

Ben sadece onun tarifini takip ediyorum.” diyor.

Practice K — Reading comprehension
