How do you feel?

Turkish often uses an adjective as a complete sentence. There is no separate word for “am / is / are” in the third person.

Important: kızgın is “angry,” while sıcak is “hot.” Sıkılmış means bored; sıkı means tight/strict.

Who feels it?

Ben yorgun-um.I am tired.
Sen yorgun-sun.You are tired.
O yorgun.He/she is tired.
Biz yorgun-uz.We are tired.
Siz yorgun-sunuz.You are tired.
Onlar yorgun(lar).They are tired.
Vowel harmony still works: mutluyum, üzgünüm, sakiniz, heyecanlısınız. If the adjective ends in a vowel, add -y-: mutlu + yum.

Questions and negatives

Ask gently and say how you do not feel.

QUESTION: mi / mı / mu / mü

NEGATIVE: değil

Mutlu değilim.I am not happy.
Yorgun değiliz.We are not tired.
O kızgın değil.He/she is not angry.
The question particle is written separately: yorgun musun? The personal ending attaches to the question particle. With değil, the personal ending attaches to değil: üzgün değilim.

Natural response: “Nasılsın?” does not always need “İyiyim.” You can say “Biraz yorgunum ama iyiyim.”

Bugün Elif’in yeni işindeki ilk günü. Elif sabah biraz gergin ve endişeli. Çünkü yeni insanlarla tanışacak. Ofise gelince müdürü onu sıcak bir şekilde karşılıyor. İş arkadaşları yardımsever ve neşeli. Elif öğle yemeğinde Zeynep’le konuşuyor. Zeynep çok sakin ve samimi. Elif artık daha rahat hissediyor.

Akşam eve dönerken yorgun ama mutlu. Annesi telefonda “Günün nasıl geçti?” diye soruyor. Elif, “Başta korkmuştum ama şimdi umutluyum. Sanırım burada mutlu olacağım,” diyor.
