Goal: Learn how to tell someone what to do or what not to do in Turkish using informal (sen) and polite/plural (siz) forms.

What is the Imperative?

The imperative is used for commands, instructions, requests, and directions. In Turkish, the verb stem (the verb without -mek / -mak) forms the basis for commands.

SEN - Informal Singular Command

When speaking to someone informally (a friend, child, or close person), use the verb stem with no extra ending.

SİZ - Polite or Plural Command

When speaking to someone politely or to a group of people, add -in / -ın / -un / -ün (or -yin / -yın / -yun / -yün if the verb stem ends in a vowel).

Negative Commands (-ma / -me)

To tell someone not to do something, add -ma / -me right after the verb stem. For siz, add -mayın / -meyin.

Make a Command Sound Polite

A bare command can sound direct. With people you do not know, customers, teachers, or older people, use the siz form and add lütfen.

Direct / informal

Bekle! · Buraya gel! · Kapıyı aç!

Polite

Lütfen bekleyin. · Buraya gelin. · Kapıyı açar mısınız?

Note: “Kapıyı açar mısınız?” is a polite request rather than a grammatical imperative, but it is often more natural with strangers.
