-di, -miş veya -yordu?
Choose the past form that matches what you know and how you see the event
Goal: Distinguish a completed event you know directly, information you learned later and an action that was continuing at a past moment.
Three views of the past
Geldi.He/she came.
I know or witnessed it.
Gelmiş.Apparently he/she came.
I learned or realised it.
Geliyordu.He/she was coming.
The action was in progress.
The event may be similar, but the speaker’s viewpoint changes. Ask: Did I know it directly? Did I learn it later? Or am I looking at the middle of the action?
Known & Completed
-di: Gördüm, Yaptım, Biliyorum
Use -di for a completed event presented as definite information
Dün Ece’yi gördüm.I saw Ece yesterday.
Toplantı saat üçte başladı.The meeting started at three.
Geçen yıl Porto’ya taşındık.We moved to Porto last year.
Film çok geç bitti. The film finished very late.
Common clues: dün, geçen hafta, iki gün önce, saat üçte. These expressions do not automatically choose the tense, but they often accompany a completed event.
Finished result
VerbCompleted formResult
yemekYemek yedim.The meal is finished.
gitmekMarkete gittim.The journey happened.
aramakDoktoru aradım.The call happened.
Learned or Realised Later
-miş: Duydum, Öğrendim, Fark Ettim
Use -miş when the information reaches you indirectly or through a later discovery
Ece taşınmış.Apparently Ece moved. Someone told me.
Dün çok yağmur yağmış.It rained a lot, apparently. I see the wet streets.
Anahtarımı evde unutmuşum.I realised I left my key at home.
Bu restoran kapanmış.It turns out this restaurant closed.
-miş does not always mean doubt. The information can be true. The ending tells us how the speaker learned or noticed it.
Same event, different source
Ali geldi.I saw him arrive or I state it directly.
Ali gelmiş.I heard it, saw evidence or just discovered it.
Background in Progress
-yordu: O Sırada Devam Ediyordu
Look at the middle of an action at a particular past moment
Saat sekizde yemek yapıyordum.I was cooking at eight.
Leyla otobüs bekliyordu.Leyla was waiting for the bus.
İnsanlar dans ediyorlardı.People were dancing.
Dışarıda yağmur yağıyordu. It was raining outside.
Common clues: o sırada, dün bu saatte, saat sekizde, ben eve geldiğim zaman. The focus is the ongoing background, not its completion.
Background + completed event
Ben yemek yapıyordum. Telefon çaldı.I was cooking. The phone rang.
Leyla yürüyordu. Yağmur başladı.Leyla was walking. It started to rain.
