What are these endings?

In Turkish, we often do not use a separate word for "am / is / are". Instead, we add a personal ending to the noun or adjective.

Examples:

Ben öğrenciyim.
= I am a student.
Sen öğrencisin.
= You are a student.
Biz öğrenciyiz.
= We are students.
Siz öğrencisiniz.
= You are a student / You are students.

Vowel harmony

The vowel in the ending changes to match the word (ı, i, u, ü). Do not worry about memorising everything immediately — learn the forms through examples.

When do we use "y"?

If the word ends in a vowel, Turkish often uses y before the ending for ben and biz.

öğrenci + im → öğrenciyim
hasta + ım → hastayım
öğrenci + iz → öğrenciyiz
hasta + ız → hastayız
