Goal: Say what you and other people are doing now, ask simple questions, make negative sentences, and reuse the words from the previous lessons.

What is Şimdiki Zaman?

Use the Turkish present continuous for actions happening now / around now. English often uses am / is / are + -ing. Turkish uses the verb plus an -iyor type ending.

Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum.
I am learning Turkish.
Ben kahve içiyorum.
I am drinking coffee.
Otobüs geliyor.
The bus is coming.
Anna otele gidiyor.
Anna is going to the hotel.

The four forms

The vowel changes to match the verb. At this level, notice the pattern and learn it through examples.

Start with the verb stem

Turkish dictionary verbs often end in -mak / -mek. Remove -mak / -mek first, then build the present continuous form.

Small spelling changes: Some common verbs change slightly when -iyor is added. For now, learn them as complete forms:

Negative: 'I am not doing...'

To make the present continuous negative, use -mıyor / -miyor / -muyor / -müyor before the personal ending.

Ben kahve içmiyorum. I am not drinking coffee.
Sen otobüs beklemiyorsun. You are not waiting for the bus.
O otele gitmiyor. He / She is not going to the hotel.
Biz çalışmıyoruz. We are not working.

Questions: Are you doing...?

Use the question particle mı / mi / mu / mü. It is written separately.

Kahve içiyor musun? Are you drinking coffee?
Türkçe öğreniyor musun? Are you learning Turkish?
Otobüs geliyor mu? Is the bus coming?
Otele gidiyor musunuz? Are you going to the hotel? (polite/plural)

The story below intentionally repeats vocabulary from the earlier workbooks: greetings, people, everyday objects, food and drink, transport, numbers, time, places, plurals, and in/from/to forms.

Günaydın! Ben Anna. Ben öğrenciyim ve Türkçe öğreniyorum. Bugün İstanbul'dayım. Saat sekiz buçuk. Otelde kahve içiyorum. Masada ekmek, peynir, elma ve su var. Çantam sandalyede. Çantada pasaport, bilet, telefon, gözlük, defter, kalem ve anahtar var. Bavulum odada. Ceketim ve ayakkabılarım da burada.

Saat dokuzda otelden çıkıyorum. Dışarıda yağmur var, bu yüzden şemsiye alıyorum. Otobüs durağı yakın. "Otobüs nerede?" diye soruyorum. Bir arkadaş, "Orada, düz ve sonra sağ," diyor. Otobüs geliyor. İki kişi bekliyor. Ben de bekliyorum. Sonra otobüse biniyorum ve okula gidiyorum.

Bir Türk kahvesi istiyorum. Hesap kırk sekiz lira. Kartla ödüyorum. "Nakit yok," diyorum. Sonra "Teşekkür ederim." - "Rica ederim."

Kafeden parka gidiyoruz. Parkta masalar ve sandalyeler var. Ben fotoğraf çekiyorum, Deniz kitap okuyor. Saat üç buçuk. Hava güzel. Sonra Deniz eve gidiyor, ben metroya gidiyorum. Metro çok uzak değil. Akşam otele dönüyorum. Biraz yorgunum ama iyiyim.

Otelde telefonumu bulamıyorum. "Telefonum nerede? Bilmiyorum!" diyorum. Çantaya bakıyorum: pasaport var, bilet var, para var, kart var, ama telefon yok. Sonra masaya bakıyorum. Telefon masada! "Tamam, burada!" diyorum.

Saat on bir. İyi geceler! Bugün çok Türkçe konuşuyorum, okuyorum, yazıyorum ve öğreniyorum.
